3D templates are programs that read a normal website and display the contents in a 3D environment.
The 3D object that uses the template is embedded inside a normal HTML webpage. There are different templates for different uses and specific needs can of course be realised as well. The 3D program reads it's contents from the pages of a standard website and displays them in the virtual world.
