The Unity Web Player is available for free and is needed to display 3D websites. Luckily a lot of people already have this plugin installed on their computer because hundreds of internet games use the same plugin. According to data provided by Unity, the web player has been downloaded over 35 million times.
The development is moving forward in a rapid pace. A new version of Google Chrome will no longer need a plug in, because the Unity routines will use the new Native Client (also called NaCl) interface. Also the Adobe Molehill project will allow Unity programs to run directly inside Flash in the near future.
